Uranium Glass Mushroom

Also known as Vaseline Glass. The first render simulates the glass under UV light, where as the second render is under normal light.

Both are textured using Lightwave 9.2's dielectric node. The "glowing" mushroom applies a thickness and incidence angle to the color to simulate how the light effects the glass in the real world.

Specs:
1 Area Light
1 HDRI
1 Spot Light (in the glowing version to help similate the glow from light passing through the glass and being dispersed onto the ground)
FPrime 3 render
4 Ray Bounces

Below is the version under natural light:
This one proved to be a bit more difficult than anticipated... It's surprisingly difficult to make clear glass look "clean" without it washing out completely under reflections and specularity.

Notes:
4 spot lights (I got rid of my area lights for this one... huge render times... not using FPrime yet)
2 HDRIs (1 Lightprobe and 1 Textured Environment)
4 glow panels for specular highlights
Render time: 1 hour 16 minutes (at 2400x3000)

Part of a Tron related project, this had initially been intended to be a reconstruction of Clue searching for Flynn's stolen games. However, the scene lacked a sense of drama. So I replaced the single tank with a large formation, and lowered the camera angle, which changed the tone of the image. The scene took on a much more dynamic and ominous feel. It also went from being a reconstruction of an existing scene to an original composition. Some liberties were taken in the creation of the scene – such as the data streams overhead – I incorporated motion blur, which was not used in the original film. This choice was done to slightly update the subject matter and to better convey movement. In the end I was quite pleased with the final scene and direction.

All modeling was done in Strata. Lit used several strategically placed point lights, one spotlight, and a lightdome. No Radiosity used in this render - it's strictly Raytraced... The bounced light of Radiosity made the scene feel "too real." Some post-render work was done in Photoshop to make the scene look and feel more like a movie still.

For this scene I wanted to capture the vast splendor of space, while generating a sense of foreboding. I had been given a very specific direction on the look of this planet and what the scene should convey. My first thought was to show as much of the planet as possible and generate the mood through the use of color. However I opted to have only a small portion of the planet's surface illuminated to try and convey a sense that the planet may not be all that it seems, and that it could possibly be hiding something. To further emphasize the mood I chose agitating colors for the nebular cloud in the background.
